Orgo Saperavi 2018
I am always keen on trying wines from the cradle of the winemaking: Georgia. This nectar is a 100% Saperavi grape from the east region of Kakheti. The vineyards are at least 50 year old vines. Gaumarjos!
In the glass the wine has a ruby colour. The intensity is medium to deep.
The aromas intensity is pronounced. It is a blaze of fresh black fruits and ripe sour cheery. There are also hints of liquorice, black pepper and balsamic essences.
In the mouth, the wine is dry with a high level of acidity and medium plus tannins. The alcohol is medium (i.e. 13.5%). Both flavour intensity and finish are medium plus. On the palate, the fruits are more concentrated, remembering the fruits preserved in alcohol. There is a slight aroma of vanilla, toast, cedar and coffee. The wine is still too young to get some tertiary flavours. I can smell just a bit of mushroom and game.
The wine is really nice. The fresh fruit is the most overwhelming flavour. This nectar is perfect with charcuterie and cheese. If you are patient enough to “forget” this bottle in your cellar, you may have a nice surprise in a couple of years.
