Montefalco Sangrantino 2014 DOCG

Umbria, Italy

This nectar is a 100% Montefalco Sagrantino, the flagship grape of Umbria. The harvest starts at the end of the second week of October. The crops macerated 3/4 weeks in 100hl French oak vats at controlled temperature below 30°C throughout the alcoholic fermentation process. Then the divine juice ages 50% in barrels (15% new) and 50% in large French oak tanks for 24 months. Before the release, the wine sleeps for 12 months in the bottle. Salute!

Appearance

In the glass the wine has a beautiful ruby colour with garnet hues. The intensity is deep. It is clear with no traces of deposit.

Nose

The aromas intensity is pronounced. It is a triumph of ripe red fruits, black pepper, and balsamic notes of eucalyptus. As secondaries, you can smell the cedar, vanilla, cloves and a hint of charred wood. The tertiaries are even more intense. There is a virile fragrance of fine leather, tobacco and gunpowder. The aromatic palette is so rounded, sometimes it looks to smell a cream, probably due to the malolactic fermentation.

Palate

In the mouth, the wine is dry with a high level of acidity and high tannins. The tannins are so smooth. The alcohol is high (14.5%), but it doesn’t burn at all. The flavour intensity is pronounced. On the palate, the fruits are less ripe, becoming more sharp as the forest red berries. The nectar is complex as it is at the nose. Elegant smoky notes, cloves, vanilla, oriental spices as the cumin. Pure joy! Glass after glass, succulent meaty hints come out.

Conclusion

This nectar is another excellent example of Montefalco Sagrantino. It is balanced, complex and never-ending. Despite the high alcohol level, it is easy to drink and fully enjoyable while you are still working with hobs! Its complexity makes it the perfect companion for a deep musing session. Perfect now, it can still improve with more ageing.
