Aglianico Del Vulture Superiore Serpara 2013 DOCG

Basilicata, Italy

This nectar is a 100% Aglianico grape from 50 years old vineyards located in the hilly town of Maschito, in Basilicata, a pearl of Southern Italy. After the harvest, the vinifcation with prefermentative maceration took place at 5 °C for 10 days and was followed by fermentation carried out using natural yeasts for 7-10 days at a maximum temperature of 26 °C. When malolactic fermentation is completed, the wine is put into barriques for 12-24 months, depending on the age of the wood (winemaking details from xtrawine.com). Salute!

Appearance

In the glass the wine has a deep and noble ruby colour.

Nose

The aromas intensity is medium plus. There are light perfumes of black fruits and spices, including a vibrant black pepper and liquorice. The oak aging donates hints of nice vanilla, charred wood and elegant cedar. The passage of the years enriched the aromatic palette with notes earth, wet leaves and tobacco.

Palate

In the mouth, the wine is dry with a medium plus level of acidity. The tannins are high and give a really pleasant astringent sensation. The alcohol is high (i.e. 14.5%) but it does not show off its muscles. The flavour intensity is pronounced. Rich notes of cooked black plum and raisins swamp the tasting buds. Then secondary hints of clove, charred wood and dark chocolate come out damming the opulence of the fruits. The tertiaries remember the earth and forest floor, although there are also refreshing balsamic notes of Mediterranean bush, especially the wild myrtle (murtedda) and thyme. Towards the end the fruits become sharp, and a lovely bitter sour cherry lingers on the palate for quite some time leaving a fulfilling sensation of cleanliness. The lasting is long and the flavours never boring.

Conclusion

The nectar is characterized by a surprising evolution, it starts with a cooked and jammy fruits and finishes with a bitter sour cherry, with delicious balsamic notes of macchia mediterranea along the entire journey. It is a powerful wine, but extremely flexible at the same time: filling if drunk by its own, a perfect sparring partner with the meal, and excellent company for a post dinner meditation.
