Montestefano Riserva 2014 DOCG

Piedmont, Italy

Today I got nice news at work, so I deserve a proper toast to myself. This nectar is 100% Nebbiolo a black grape with high level of tannins and acidity, but little colour. The grapes fermented on the skin in stainless steel tank at 30° for 28 days. The malolactic fermentation is completed. This nectar is a Riserva. It aged 36 months in oak casks and 12 months in the bottle. The producer suggests that this can be aged for the next 20 years. Salute!

Appearance

In the glass the wine has a charming garnet colour. The intensity is pale.

Nose

The aromas intensity is pronounced, but it does not scream. Few seconds after pouring the glass, you can already smell the female fragrance of the rose. Then the red fruits come out, especially a succulent red cherry and a home made strawberry jam. The aromatic palette is quite warm, with hints of sultana and raisin, perfectly offset by more vibrant notes of black pepper and eucalyptus. The three years nap in the oak donates sophisticated flavours of vanilla, cloves, cedar and a light charred wood. The tertiary aromas are surprisingly quite masculine: precious leather, mushroom, game and a hint of farmyard.

Palate

In the mouth, the wine is dry with a high level of acidity and medium plus tannins. If you haven’t eaten anything, then the alcohol (14%) will give you a pleasant heat wave. The flavour intensity is pronounced, with the secondary and tertiary dominating the aromatic bouquet. The flavour intensity is pronounced and the lasting is long. The nectar left a beautiful sensation of cleanness and astringency in the mouth. The sour cherry is never ending.

Conclusion

This wine is pure elegance. Don’t expect punchy flavours or harsh tannins. Everything is in equilibrium. Virile notes counterbalance the female perfume of the rose. It is good to wash down a steak or a succulent casserole, but it is sublime to drink after dinner. It is not cheap, but it is worth every pence.
