Barolo 2015 DOCG

Piemonte, Italy

After a week spent drinking very good wines in Armenia and Georgia, and after a week of detox, my level of alcoholic nationalism is at all time highs. Today, it is Barolo day! This nectar is a 100% Nebbiolo grape. The vineyards are located 200 and 250 meter above the seal level and the average age is 40 years old. The fermentation and maceration process lasts 20 days in stainless steel tanks. Then the divine juice matures 30 months in Austrian and Slovonian large oak barrels and other 6 months in the bottle before the release. Salute!

Appearance

In the glass the wine has a garnet colour. The intensity is medium.

Nose

The aromas intensity is medium plus. It is unmistakably a Barolo. In the glass there is a triumph of red fruits, a hint of liquorice, black pepper and dark chocolate. The fragrance of tomato leaf gives a touch of freshness. The long period in oak enriches the aromatic palette with scent of cloves, coffee, toast and an elegant cedar. The bottle aging instead donates the classic perfume of leather, meaty and forest floor.

Palate

In the mouth, the wine is dry with a high level of acidity. The tannins are high and they give an amazing astringent sensation. The red fruit is more rounded and succulent, there are also some balsamic notes. The leather becomes more masculine. There are also notes of tobacco and mushrooms. The flavour intensity is pronounced and the finish is long.

Conclusion

This is such a beautiful surprise! I had a bottle of this Barolo (different vintage) probably 5 years ago and I wasn’t impressed at all. But this 2015 is spectacular. It has everything you expect from a good Barolo: virility, complexity and powerful tannins. I enjoy it with the rare 30 day aged sirloin, but it would have been even better with a fillet tartare with white truffle flakes or with a salsiccia di Bra. If you love yourself, you have to go to Piemonte at least once in your life. Excellent food and even more sublime wines. If you go in October/November, you can enjoy the white truffle festival in Alba. Excellent value for money, and it is an armed robbery in the church when you buy it on sale.
