Draculea Vlad The Impaler 2017

Dealu Mare, Romania

This nectar is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Fateascâ Neagrâ and Merlot from Sahateni vineyards located in Delau Mare. The famous Romanian winemaker Aurelia Visinescu produces the wine. Grapes were harvested on the middle of September by hand. Alcoholic fermentation in closed tanks with gentle cap irrigator, extended skin contact for 21 days. Malolactic fermentation and maturation took place in Romanian oak barrels. Sănătate!

In the glass the wine has beautiful ruby colour .The intensity is deep.

The aromas intensity is medium plus, but it needs a couples of swirls to release all its aromas. At the beginning we have hints of red fruits, as cherry, raspberry and a very succulent sour cherry almost remembering the syrup. A sharp note of black pepper counterbalances the sweetness of the secondary aromas. They include a rich vanilla and cedar. The tertiaries are still feeble, a touch of meaty and dry cranberry.

In the mouth, the wine is dry with a medium acidity and tannins. The alcohol is high (i.e. 14%) but almost imperceptible. The flavour intensity is pronounced. On the palate, it an explosion of black fruits: black currant, ripe cherry, plum, and prune. Also the secondary aromas have changed compared to the nose, remembering the charred wood, toast, and smoke. The texture is pure pleasure. The wine is very velvety and creamy. The lasting is long.

Despite the labelling, well defined by a friend of mine as: “na cafonata” (boorish), this nectar is incredibly elegant. At the nose, the red fruits typical of Merlot and a rich vanilla characterize the aromatic bouquet. Instead on the palate, the black fruits typical of Cabernet Sauvignon enriched by hints of charred wood, smoke and toast dominate the scene. This wine is absolutely not boring or byzantine. It is actually very vibrant, with clear secondary aromas that combine perfectly with the richness of the fruits.
