Elim, South Africa
It is a 100% Pinot Noir from c15 years old vineyards located in Elim area. The harvest took place in mid-February. The grapes are left 1 day cold soaking in open fermenter, fermentation starts naturally, then inoculated with selected burgundy yeast, 2 pump overs and 2 punch downs done daily during peak fermentation, maximum temperature 28°C, near the end of fermentation little to no pump overs, only punch downs. Then the divine juice ages in French oak barrique for 10 months, 20% new oak, 2nd fill 20%, 3rd fill 30% & 4th fill 30%. The producer suggests a potential ageing of 3-5 years Cheers!
In the glass the wine has an elegant ruby colour. The intensity is medium to pale.
The aromas intensity is medium plus. The aromatic palette is characterized by ripe wild red fruits, a sweet strawberry with jam hints. A sharp black pepper and notes of alcohol preserved fruits counterbalance the sweetness of the fresh fruits. The secondary aromas remember the vanilla, cloves, cedar and dark chocolate. The tertiaries are the classical one characterizing this grape: leather, farmyard and fry cranberry.
In the mouth, the wine is dry with a medium high level of acidity. The tannins are quite rounded and smoothed. The flavour intensity is pronounced with a long lasting. At the palate the red fruit becomes quite crunchy, with a lot of peppery and spices notes. The secondary aromas become more virile: charred wood, toast and smoke. The tertiaries remember a feeble leather, earth and dry berry.
It is a really beautiful and charming Pinot Noir. The red fruit dominates the aromatic bouquet, although the secondary aromas are quite lively especially in the mouth. The fruits are ripe at the nose, but crunchy at the palate. The tannins are incredibly smooth and silky making this wine a valid option for an aperitif.
