Senatore Primitivo Gioia del Colle DOC 2015
This nectar is a 100% Primitivo from vines planted in 1990. The grapes are handpicked in the first 10 days of September, carefully selected in the cellar, then crushed and de-stemmed and then kept in steel tanks. Each step takes place at a controlled temperature. Once the skins are separated, the wine goes into steel silos. Then the divine juice ages for 12 months in in 50 hl Slavonian oak barrels, preferably already flavored by other wines. Salute!
The wine has a lively ruby color. The intensity is medium.
The aroma intensity is medium plus. Hints of fresh wild black fruits and ripe black fig dominate the aromatic palette. As the nectar takes more oxygen, balsamic notes of bramble, fig leaf, pine resin come out followed by spices like the black pepper. The secondary aromas are quite bland, just an hint of toast. The tertiaries remember the fine leather and dry cranberry.
In the mouth, the wine is dry with high level of acidity. The tannins are pure silk (medium). The alcohol is medium (i.e. 13.5 %), and it gives a pleasant heatwave. On the palate, still hints of bramble, black pepper, fig, black plum, but also scent of freshly cut grass, summer wildflowers, licorice and fine jam. The secondaries includes cedar, a light vanilla and cloves. Both flavor intensity and lasting are medium plus.
This wine is the proof that also the Primitivo can be elegant, when it hides its muscles and dampens its natural opulence. The nectar is almost refreshing at the nose; agile and lively on the palate. Yes, we have a lot of black fruits, but the spectrum of balsamic notes is a little masterpiece. There is the perfume of the bramble, but also the pine resin, fig leaf, the summer wildflowers, and the freshly cut grass. If it had a longer lasting, it would be my new confessor.
