Cantine San Marzano
This producer create astonishing wines, putting in our glasses all the sun and generosity of Puglia. This nectar is 100% Negroamaro, The grapes are harvested manually with small baskets. The maceration process has two steps: 18 days on 80% of the mass, 25 days on 20%. The fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 24-26 °C. Then the wine ages in French and Caucasian oak barrique for 12 months.
In the glass the wine has a ruby colour. The intensity is medium to deep with tints of garnet on the rim. It is clear with no traces of deposits.
The aromas intensity is pronounced. The fragrances are powerful and pervasive. You can smell the violet and the iris, but then the concentrate red fruits explode in your nostrils. It is a blaze of sour cherry, cranberry and fully ripe red plum. The opulence of the cooked fruits, fig, prune and raisins is made vibrant and not boring by a fine hint of eucalyptus and black pepper. The secondary aromas, developed thank to the influence, are rich. There are notes of coffee, dark chocolate, cedar, toast and charred wood. The time flowing has developed also beautiful flavours of dried fruits, tobacco, meaty and forest floor.
In the mouth, the wine is dry with a high level of acidity and medium plus tannins. The alcohol is high (i.e. 14.5%), but fully tamed. Flavour intensity is a nuclear blast while the finish is long. On the palate, the sour cherry is domineering. But there is also a concentrate of sultana, kirsch, preserved fruits, vanilla, cloves, fig, prune, vanilla, cloves. If you are by your own, keep the wine in your mouth, injecting air through your lips and you will fell clearly a strong charred wood aroma. Also at the palate the wine is so opulent, you cannot stop swirling and drinking it.
This wine is like the mum: generous, spontaneous, loving and sweet. It will never betray you. But you know, the love for the mum, it is not that kind of love that drives us nuts or makes our hearts beat strongly. So probably you won’t stay awake overnight dreaming this nectar, but whenever you drink it, you will be glad to be born.
Drink it by its own to fully enjoy the aromatic palette or towards the end of the meal, when the teeth show some violet shades and the laugh is noisy. It is tough to find a meal that can compete with the wine’s expressive power. Just a complaint: “dear producer, why don’t you use a lighter bottle? It is too heavy! I cannot put many of them in the luggage, when I fly back to London! Look the Frenchs, even for the best wines, only light and plain bottles, nothing fancy!”
