Cantina Vecchia Torre

Barocco Reale 2014

Puglia, Italia

This wine is 100% Primitivo from the area of Leverano (Lecce). The grape most ferments in stainless steel tanks for 10-12 days at a controlled temperature of 24-26°C. Then the divine juice ages for at least 12 month in French oak barrique. Salute!

Appearance

The wine has a ruby color. The intensity is deep.

Nose

The aroma intensity is medium plus. Immediately notes of ripe black currant, fine strawberry jam and black pepper come out. The secondary aromas include vanilla, cloves, cedar, but also a light toast. The tertiaries remember the dried blackberry, prune, fig, and dry flowers.

Palate

In the mouth, the wine is dry with medium high level of acidity. The tannins are medium, while the alcohol is high (i.e. 14.5 %). On the palate, we still taste a lot of ripe fruit and spices, with secondary note of charred wood and toast take the stage. The flavor intensity is pronounced and the lasting is medium plus. The texture is incredibly smooth.

Conclusion

This Primitivo in purezza is genuine and generous wine, but no more than that. The aromatic profile is rather simple, with a lot of ripe black fruits, strawberry jam, and spices balanced by a sharp charred wood and toast. The tertiaries are quite developed, but without adding any teasing complexity.
