Beronia

Rioja Crianza 2016

Rioja, Spain

I hesitated a lot before buying this bottle. Then I told to myself: “ if you want to create your wine blog, you must try everything! You don’t care if the nectar is cheap, the bottle looks sad, and what it contains come from one of the most mainstream area of the world, just buy it!”. So, it is thank to my sense of duty beating my prejudice that I manage to uncork this Rioja. Luckily I did it, because this blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuelo from Rioja region is really nice! The term Crianza on the label means that the wine has a minimum ageing of 24 months, of which at least 6 months in the barrel. In this case, the barrel ageing has last 12 months in French and American oaks. Salud!

Appearance

In the glass the wine has a ruby colour. The intensity is medium. It is clear with no traces of deposits.

Nose

The aromas are quite intensive at the nose (medium plus). As expected, given the grapes used in the blend, the wine is a triumph of red fruits, especially redcurrant and cranberry. There are also some herbaceous notes as the tomato leaf and the green bell pepper. I like also the pleasantly sharp note of black pepper. As secondary aromas, I can find the vanilla, the cedar and the charred wood. As tertiaries, I can smell the leather and the dry cranberry. There is also a hint of eucalyptus. About secondary aromas, I can smell a bit of cloves and cedar. On the tertiary, we have the “fragrance” of wet leaves, leather, earth and farmyard.

Palate

In the mouth, the wine is dry with a high level of acidity. The tannins are there, medium plus. The alcohol is medium (i.e. 13.5%), enough to warm up your palate without burning. I categorize the wine as medium plus body with medium plus flavour intensity and a medium plus finish.

On the palate we find all the aromas already evident to the nose, with a stronger charred wood and the pepper.

Conclusion

This wine has several strengths. It is well made, rich in flavours, quite versatile…. and when it is on sale, it is a real bargain. Good option if you are looking for an easy drink.
